Before Christmas we created this winter wonderland small world in our tuff tray which was so popular the Little Tots requested it again. Now we’ve actually had some actual snow they were excited to recreate this as for some of them it was their first experience of real snow (this post contains affiliate links).

This was quick to set up and it was lovely to watch the Little Tots explore by getting their hands stuck into the ‘snow’ and using it to make up plenty of stories.

To create this small world set up you will need:

  • Tuff spot
  • Tin foil to line it
  • 1kg bag of flour
  • Small world village / people
  • Pine cones and cottonwool balls optional

Firstly I lined the tray with foil, you don’t have to do this but as it’s black underneath I thought a silver lining would look more effective. I used a 1kg bag of value flour and added our HappyLand Village set to it, a few cotton wool balls, some pine cones and some mini Christmas trees and then let them see what was awaiting them when the woke up from their afternoon nap.

They were very impressed and their little faces lit up when they saw that it had been snowing on their toys whilst they had been sleeping. The flour added a great sensory element and didn’t make as much mess as I thought it would.

Setting out the HappyLand set like this really inspired their imaginative play and the two Little Tots played quietly with it all afternoon….and it’s the first thing they asked for when the returned the following morning.

I’m just waiting for the ice to melt off our tuff tray which has currently been left out in the garden as it’s frozen solid so I can do this again with them. If you don’t have a tuff tray this would also work well in a small tray and with any type of small world toy.

More winter fun:

To further extend this activity we might:

  • Add different small world toys such as polar bears and other arctic animals
  • Try a different type of fake snow such as cloud dough or snow dough
  • Use water and ice and polar animals to make an arctic small world
  • Create some snowy pictures using puffy paint and glitter
  • Make some winter playdough and add the HappyLand set
